Want to join the birthday celebration?
For Sophia’s birthday let’s celebrate friends, art, and the movement of time!
Holy Days and Holidays
As we remember with gratitude all the gifts we have received, we ready for the December and January celebrations of life and family. To celebrate the Mythological family incorporated in Sophia’s painting, The Marriage of Mnemasyne & Zeus / The Mom and Dad of Greek Mythology we focus on her intention to paint their mythic daughters as 9 muses.
Meet the Family
Sophia was born in the Bronx, NYC to Greek immigrant parents. She was the youngest of three children and grew up to follow in her paternal ancestors footsteps.
She longed to be a traditional iconography painter like her Uncle and Grandfather and pursued her dream as an adult.
Meet her family and hear her story!
A dream comes true!
Sophia’s debut to the public was introduced by the owner of the Meridian Gallery, San Francisco, in 1999.
Does your name inspire you?
Sophia found inspiration in her own name!
From her earliest years as a little girl on the Long Island Savalas family compound, she was prized and reminded that the feminine, co-creative Spirit of God, was called “Sophia” (Greek for Wisdom).
As spoken in the Ancient Hebrew Scriptures, “When God fixed the foundation of earth then was I [Sophia] beside God as Artesian; I was God’s delight day by day, playing before God all the while, playing over the whole of God’s Earth.”
Sophia was devoted to both abstract painting as well as Icons of Madonna and Child. She found in the writings of the Medieval mystic, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), the connection of Mother Mary and Mother Sophia.
Sketch used for this post is taken directly from one of Sophia’s many art journals.
